Story Behind the Name
Story Behind the Name
During the summer of 2002, a very significant and unique event happened on the north side of Stonegate, about one quarter of a mile away from where our school is built.
On July 15, 2002, heavy equipment operators for the Terrabrook Development in the Stonegate unearthed the fossil remains of a mammoth while excavating for a road leading into the Stonegate subdivision. They quickly halted operations and worked with the Denver Museum of Nature and Science to remove and preserve the remains.
The museum transported the remains back to Denver and upon further investigation, determined that Mammoths lived in the north Parker area nearly 1.5 million to 11,000 years ago, when they became extinct. This Stonegate Mammoth is thought to have lived about 200,000 years ago.
The proposed school name would signify what once was, and will be the strength and timelessness of the Great Mammoth, and the grace and innocence of our youth. The name of the school also signifies how high we want our students to strive in reaching "mammoth heights" in their education.
